Brown Mountain OHV Trail

Mystery lights and granite fights

Difficult

Brown Mountain’s reputation extends beyond its brutal rock ledges and root-choked climbs — this is where the famous Brown Mountain Lights have mystified locals since Cherokee times. The 8-mile trail climbs relentlessly through rhododendron tunnels and across exposed granite faces that’ll scrape paint off your rocker panels. The technical crux comes at Helicopter Rock, a near-vertical granite slab that separates the pretenders from the contenders, while the summit rewards survivors with 360-degree views of the Blue Ridge and Grandfather Mountain.

Difficult rating earned through elevation gain and technical rock work — you’ll need 35-inch tires, lockers, and serious rock sliders. Best tackled in dry conditions between April and October when the granite offers grip instead of a slip-n-slide. No permits but respect the wilderness boundaries. Limited camping at nearby Curtis Creek or Mortimer campgrounds. What you earn is bragging rights on one of North Carolina’s most demanding trails, plus the chance to witness those mysterious lights dancing across the valley at dusk.
