Talladega National Forest Forest Road 600 Shoal Creek Falls Technical Loop

Rocky descent to Alabama's premier waterfall

Moderate

Forest Road 600 drops through weathered sandstone and shale toward Shoal Creek Falls, one of Alabama’s most dramatic waterfalls plunging 60 feet into a boulder-strewn pool. The route starts near Cheaha State Park and winds through mixed hardwood forest before hitting the technical section—a series of rocky ledges and loose shale descents that’ll test your line choice and tire compound. Multiple creek crossings increase difficulty after rain, and the final approach to the falls requires navigating around house-sized boulders that’ve tumbled from the cliffs above.

This is solid intermediate 4×4 territory requiring high clearance and low-range capability for the steeper descents. Stock vehicles with good tires and skid plates can handle it, but expect some pucker moments on the off-camber sections. Best tackled April through October when creek levels are manageable. No permits needed, dispersed camping available along the upper sections. You’ll earn one of Alabama’s premier waterfall views and some genuine technical driving without leaving the state.
