Forest Road 42A Panther Creek to Rocky Mountain

Forest Road 42A splits off from the main Cooper Creek circuit near Panther Creek, immediately dropping you into a different world of granite slabs and tight switchbacks. This forgotten spur climbs 1,800 feet through dense rhododendron tunnels before opening onto Rocky Mountain’s exposed ridgeline, where the trail becomes a technical rock crawl over house-sized granite boulders. The payoff comes at mile 8 where you crest the ridge and get unobstructed views across the Blue Ridge toward Brasstown Bald.

This is no Sunday drive—you’ll need real 4WD with aggressive tires and underbody protection for the granite gardens. Spring runoff turns the creek crossings into proper water features, and summer storms make the exposed ridge sections sketchy. Best tackled May through September with a full day blocked out. No permits needed, but fuel up in Dahlonega since there’s nothing closer. Come for the solitude and technical challenge that’ll remind you why Georgia’s mountains deserve respect.
