Sumter National Forest Parsons Mountain Fire Tower Circuit
Blue Ridge granite testing metal and nerve
Forest Service Road 708 spirals 12 miles up Parsons Mountain to South Carolina’s tallest active fire tower at 3,173 feet, threading through granite outcrops and mountain laurel thickets that define the Blue Ridge foothills. The route begins deceptively easy near Walhalla Fish Hatchery, then turns brutal with rock gardens, off-camber ledges, and three technical creek crossings including the notorious Jones Gap Ford where undercarriage clearance becomes critical.
This difficult trail requires serious 4WD capability with skid plates, differential lockers preferred for the steepest pitches. Avoid during winter ice or summer thunderstorms when granite becomes treacherous. No permits but inform rangers of your climb. The reward is panoramic views from the fire tower cab spanning three states, plus primitive camping spots near the summit. Pack extra food and water—recovery from the technical sections can take hours longer than expected.
