This 14-mile loop follows old strip mine haul roads across reclaimed Cumberland Mountain ridges where coal companies carved terraces into the landscape from the 1960s through 1980s. The route climbs to 2,400 feet at Frozen Head overlook, offering views across the Crab Orchard Mountains while passing through grasslands where Tennessee’s reintroduced elk herd often grazes during early morning and late evening hours. Abandoned mining equipment still rusts in the hollows—dragline cables, conveyor foundations, and the occasional forgotten hardhat.
