Otter River State Forest Sand Road Circuit
Deep sand two-tracks through central Mass pine barrens
The sand roads cut through 1,000 acres of pitch pine and scrub oak that feel more like Cape Cod than central Massachusetts. These old logging roads turn into momentum runs through sugar sand, especially the challenging stretch past Beaman Pond where decades of ATV traffic have created deep ruts and sandy climbs. The circuit connects several beaver ponds and wetland areas, with the gnarliest section being the approach to the remote camping area near the state forest’s eastern boundary.
Difficult rating due to the deep sand that’ll bog down anything without proper tires and technique. High-clearance 4WD essential, aired-down tires recommended. Spring and early summer offer the best conditions before the sand gets too churned up. No permits required but camping is restricted to designated areas only. Fuel up in Gardner or Winchendon. You’ll get genuine technical driving practice and access to some surprisingly wild country in the middle of suburbia.
