Kiowa Grasslands Sand Hills Circuit

The Kiowa National Grassland’s sand hills stretch across 136,000 acres of what was once the heart of the Dust Bowl, now recovered into rolling dunes that challenge even experienced sand drivers. This 28-mile loop connects old ranch roads through the Sand Creek drainage, where deep sand pockets and hidden washouts have been swallowing trucks since the 1930s. The route passes the abandoned homestead at Antelope Springs, where windmill foundations mark where families tried to scratch out a living before the big blow.

Moderate difficulty requires 4WD with good tires — aired down to 15-20 PSI — plus recovery gear and a buddy vehicle for the inevitable sand entrapment. Summer heat is brutal and water sources are nonexistent, so spring and fall offer the best conditions. No permits needed, dispersed camping allowed, but the nearest fuel is 40 miles away in Boise City. What you get: a genuine taste of what broke the farmers and an education in how the prairie fought back.
