Kiowa National Grassland Mills Canyon Dispersed Sites
A surprising green canyon cut deep into the otherwise flat prairie landscape, with a dozen primitive camping spots spread along Mills Canyon Creek. Towering cottonwoods provide rare shade on the Great Plains, and a natural spring ensures reliable water year-round. Sites vary from creek-side spots under the trees to rim camping with panoramic prairie views. Popular with locals but rarely crowded except during deer season.
Canyon access road is steep and can be slippery when wet — 4WD recommended in questionable conditions. Creek crossings required to reach some sites. Road may drift shut in heavy snow. No facilities, pack out all trash. Outstanding stargazing due to minimal light pollution.
