Deam Wilderness Tecumseh Trail Technical Loop
Indiana's toughest wilderness challenge
The Deam Wilderness Tecumseh Trail cuts through 13,000 acres of Indiana’s most rugged backcountry, where steep ridges and creek bottoms test both driver skill and vehicle capability. This technical loop follows old logging roads and fire trails through dense hardwood forest, with Crooked Creek crossing requiring careful line selection during spring runoff and the climb to Hickory Ridge demanding low-range finesse on loose shale.
This is expert-level terrain demanding serious 4WD with skid plates, recovery gear, and aggressive tires. Spring mud and fall leaf-slick conditions amplify the challenge significantly. No facilities exist within the wilderness – pack everything including extra fuel and water. Dispersed camping allowed but expect to earn every mile. Best tackled April through November when creek levels are manageable. This route delivers genuine Indiana wilderness solitude and some of the state’s most technical driving challenges.
