Starved Rock State Park Visitor Center
Starved Rock rises 125 feet above the Illinois River, crowned by a visitor center and historic lodge that’s been welcoming travelers since 1939. The park’s eighteen canyons carved into St. Peter Sandstone create waterfalls that flow best in spring and after heavy rains. The visitor center houses exhibits on the area’s Native American history and French colonial past, plus trail maps for the 13 miles of marked hiking paths.
Access is off I-80 via well-marked state highways — no clearance issues. The lodge restaurant and gift shop make this a solid resupply stop, and the parking areas can handle larger rigs. Spring brings crowds for wildflowers and waterfall flows, while winter offers solitude and ice formations in the canyons.
