Bulldog Gulch Trail

Granite gauntlet that eats differentials

Expert

Bulldog Gulch carves a narrow, boulder-choked passage through granite walls northwest of Hill City, following an old mining access road that was never meant for modern vehicles. The trail starts innocuously enough on Forest Road 345 before diving into a technical maze of house-sized granite boulders, off-camber ledges, and tight squeezes that’ll test your spotter’s patience and your differential’s strength. The crux section requires careful line selection through a series of granite steps that have stopped plenty of rigs—look for the scratches on the rocks and bent recovery points to see where others have failed.

This is expert-level technical terrain requiring a heavily modified 4WD with rock sliders, skid plates, lockers front and rear, and at least 35-inch tires. Bring a full recovery kit, spare driveline parts, and a skilled spotter who knows granite. Best attempted in dry conditions from June through September—wet granite is suicidal. No permits required, but respect private mining claims in the area. The payoff is bragging rights on one of the most challenging trails in the Black Hills and views into some spectacular granite formations that few people ever see up close.
