Seneca Creek Backcountry Road

Technical creek crossing route to wild trout waters.

Difficult

Forest Road 112 traces Seneca Creek for 11 miles through some of the wildest country left in West Virginia, dead-ending at the headwaters beneath Spruce Knob. The single-lane track crosses the creek multiple times on submerged rock fords, with the trickiest crossing at mile 7 where spring snowmelt turns a gentle wade into a potential vehicle wash. Rocky ledges and root-strewn climbs demand careful line selection, especially the notorious switchback at Judy Springs where many rigs high-center.

Difficult rating earned through water crossings and technical rock sections requiring experienced 4WD operation. Lifted vehicles with rock sliders recommended, plus recovery gear for the inevitable stuck moment. Open May through November, but early season means higher water. No permits required, excellent dispersed camping throughout. This road delivers you to brook trout water that sees maybe a dozen anglers per season – the kind of solitude that’s worth busted oil pans.
