Lajitas to Terlingua Creek Ghost Town Loop
Mercury mining ghost town circuit in Big Bend country
This loop connects the ghost towns of Terlingua and Study Butte through a maze of old mining roads that once hauled mercury ore during World War II, when this remote corner of Texas produced the strategic mineral that helped win the war. You’ll navigate technical arroyo crossings, climb steep mesa switchbacks, and discover abandoned mine shafts, crumbling adobe ruins, and rusted machinery scattered across the Chihuahuan Desert like a post-apocalyptic movie set.
The route requires high-clearance 4WD for rocky washes and steep grades, though it’s manageable for experienced drivers with basic recovery gear. Best tackled October through March when temperatures won’t cook you alive, and fuel up in Lajitas since there’s nothing reliable between ghost towns. This is living history combined with technical desert driving—you’ll earn your cold beer at the Terlingua Trading Post knowing you’ve crossed some of Texas’s most storied mining country.
