Castle Divide Road

Wyoming's forgotten alpine mining country traverse

Moderate

Castle Divide Road punches through Wyoming’s forgotten country between the Bighorn and Absaroka ranges, following old sheepherder and mining routes through country that looks more like Scotland than the American West. The 38-mile track starts near Shell and climbs to 9,400 feet at Castle Rock, passing the crumbling remains of the Bald Mountain mining camp where copper dreams died in the 1920s. Expect technical rock sections after mile 22 and creek crossings that’ll keep you honest.

Moderate difficulty requiring stock 4WD with decent ground clearance and skid plates for the rocky sections. Snow closes the high country from October to June, making July-September prime time. No permits required but bring extra fuel, water, and warm gear — weather changes fast at altitude. Cell service disappears after Shell. What you get is pristine Wyoming wilderness, world-class camping spots, and a route most locals don’t even know exists.
