Bighorn National Forest Medicine Wheel Dispersed Sites
A handful of dispersed sites scattered along Forest Road 12 near the Medicine Wheel offer some of Wyoming’s most spectacular high-country camping. At 9,600 feet, you’re camping in alpine meadows with sweeping views across the Bighorn Basin and into Montana. Sites are just pullouts along the forest road — no tables or rings, but the scenery makes up for it. Nights are cold even in summer, and afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast.
The road is typically open June through October, depending on snow. It’s a rough, winding mountain road that demands respect — no place for large RVs or trailers. The Medicine Wheel archaeological site is a short walk from most camping areas, but respect the sacred nature of the site. Water is available at the visitor center during operating season.
