Bighorn National Forest Tensleep Canyon Dispersed Sites
A string of primitive sites along Tensleep Creek in one of Wyoming’s most scenic canyons. Red sandstone walls rise 1,000 feet on both sides while the creek creates natural swimming holes between campsites. Room for 6-8 rigs spread over a mile of creek access. Cottonwoods provide shade at lower sites, with ponderosa pines higher up. Popular with rock climbers tackling the limestone walls. Creek water requires treatment.
Forest Road 27 is rough but passable for high-clearance 2WD. Flash flood danger during heavy rains — sites flood quickly when storms hit upstream. Best access May through October before snow closes the upper canyon. No cell service in the canyon bottom.
