Kunene River Mouth — Northern Namib Coastal Flats Dispersed Camp
This is as far north as you go on the Skeleton Coast without crossing into Angola. The Kunene River empties into the Atlantic here through a wide, reed-fringed delta, and the surrounding coastal flats are a genuine wilderness — desert-adapted lion territory, massive flamingo flocks, and the kind of silence that makes you check your ears. There’s nothing out here: no signage, no ablutions, no water. You pick a flat piece of ground above the flood line, park facing the river, and that’s your camp. Nights get cold fast off the ocean even in summer.
Access is via the rough coastal track through the northern Skeleton Coast Park from Möwe Bay — expect deep sand, corrugations, and river crossings that change season to season. A valid Skeleton Coast Park permit is mandatory; arrange it through NWR Namibia well in advance as visitor numbers are tightly controlled. 4WD with low-range and sand recovery gear is non-negotiable. Fuel from Opuwo or Möwe Bay — nothing closer.
End of the road. Angola across the water.
