Hartmann’s Valley — Marienfluss Southern Flats Dispersed Camp
Hartmann’s Valley sits parallel to the Marienfluss, separated by the Otjihipa Mountains, and the southern flats offer wide-open dispersed camping on a gravel and sand plain with zero infrastructure. You’re looking at big sky, rust-coloured dunes to the west, and the occasional oryx wandering through camp. The Marienfluss Conservancy manages this area and requires a permit — sort that in Opuwo before you head in. No water, no toilets, no fire rings. This is self-sufficient or bust.
Access is via the notorious Marienfluss track from Puros or over the Otjihipa switchbacks from the east — both demand a capable, high-clearance 4WD with a full jerry can loadout. The deep Hartmann’s River sand crossings are the crux. Best May through September when the sand is firmer and temps are survivable. Do not attempt in summer rains — the river comes up fast and you will be stuck for days.
Remote valley floor camp, Kaokoland edge.
