Gibb River Road — Imintji to Silent Grove via the Kimberley Ranges Heart
Red dirt, big gorges, zero mercy.
Pull out of Imintji Community store — one of the few fuel stops on the Gibb — and the road immediately reminds you who’s in charge. The corrugations can shake bolts loose inside 50 km if you’re running street pressures. This segment threads through the heart of the King Leopold Ranges before dropping toward the turnoff for Silent Grove campsite, gateway to Bell Gorge. The river crossing at Barnett River — chest-deep in a wet year, a rocky wade in the dry — is the defining moment. Read the water before you commit. Swim it if you’re unsure. Plenty of rigs have gone in sideways here.
High-clearance 4WD is mandatory; a proper snorkel and bash plates are strongly recommended. Air down to around 28 psi on the corrugations or you’ll be chasing vibration the whole way. Dry season only — May through September — because the road closes completely in the wet. Fuel up at Imintji and again at Mount Barnett (Mornington turnoff) or you’ll be rationing. No permit for the road itself, but Bell Gorge day use has a fee. Satellite comms are non-negotiable out here. You get sunset gorge swims, red rock walls dropping into dark pools, and genuine remoteness. That’s the deal.

A snorkel is not optional here — the water crossings between Imintji and Silent Grove can run thigh-deep or higher during and just after the Wet. A high-clearance 4WD with a snorkel is the minimum; anything lower risks hydrolocking. Run AT or MT tyres, not highway rubber.
When does the Gibb River Road actually close, and is it passable in October?
The road typically closes June–November isn't the issue — it's May through September that's the dry season window when it's reliably passable. October sees the first build-up storms, and the road can become impassable overnight. Check Main Roads WA road status before you leave Fitzroy Crossing, not the night before in Perth.

No permit is required to drive the Gibb River Road itself. Silent Grove campground is managed by DBCA and charges a nightly fee — pay online or on arrival via the Parks and Wildlife app. Bell Gorge day access also has a separate fee; cash is not reliable out here so sort it digitally before you lose service.

The Lennard River crossing is the technical pinch point; depending on the season it can have soft entries and a rocky riverbed that'll stuff a poorly chosen line. Momentum management and tyre pressure are your two biggest tools on this run.
How far is the nearest fuel from the Imintji end, and can I rely on anything along the route?
Imintji Community Store sells fuel but hours are limited and stock isn't guaranteed — fill up in Fitzroy Crossing before heading out. There is no fuel between Imintji and Silent Grove, and this 140 km stretch plus your approach adds up fast. Carry a minimum 20-litre jerry can; running a long-range tank is the smarter call on the full Gibb.
