Past Galvans Gorge — where a single fig tree splits a boulder above a pool stained amber — the Gibb River Road sheds the last pretense of easy travel. This central Kimberley segment punches through Mornington Station’s 3,000-square-kilometre private wilderness, crosses the Adcock River, and drops into the Fitzroy catchment drainage. Corrugations build steadily after the Mount Barnett roadhouse, wash crossings bite at river-level twice before the station gate, and the red bulldust in the flat sections will clog any filter that isn’t properly sealed.
Moderate to difficult in the dry season — May through October — but the wash crossings and the station tracks become genuinely impassable once the Wet arrives. Minimum: a high-clearance 4WD with dual spares, long-range tank, and snorkel fitted if you’re running late in the season. The Mount Barnett Roadhouse at the Manning Gorge junction is the last fuel stop before Mornington; gap is over 200 km. The payoff is real wilderness: the Annie Creek gorge at Mornington runs all year, cassowary-orange dragonflies everywhere, and zero mobile coverage from the gorge entrance to camp. This stretch rewards drivers who slow down and look.

A stock 200 Series will get through, but a snorkel is non-negotiable given the creek crossings on the Fitzroy River tributaries between Galvans and Mornington. Dual full-size spares are mandatory — corrugations here chew tyres and you're 100+ km from help. A 2-inch lift adds margin but isn't required if your tyres are in good shape.
When does the Gibb River Road close and is this section accessible in the wet season?
The wet season (November–April) closes the Gibb entirely — crossings flood and station tracks become impassable mud. The Shire of Derby-West Kimberley gates sections when conditions deteriorate, sometimes as early as October or as late as May depending on the year. Check current road status with the Shire before departing from Derby.
Do you need a permit or pay fees to enter Mornington Wildlife Sanctuary?
Yes — Mornington Wilderness Camp is operated by Australian Wildlife Conservancy and entry requires a paid booking; you cannot free-camp inside the sanctuary boundaries without one. Book directly through AWC before your trip, not on arrival. The camp itself offers powered and unpowered sites with basic facilities, which makes it a genuine resupply stop mid-route.
What's the hardest section and what actually makes it difficult?
The corrugated red-dirt tracks between Imintji Store and the Fitzroy River crossing are the grind — relentless washboard that will shake loose anything not properly secured and punish underinflated or worn tyres. The Fitzroy crossing itself can run thigh-deep in early dry season; walk it before you drive it. Speed is not your friend on this stretch — slow and steady protects both your rig and your teeth.
How much fuel do you need to carry between Derby and Mornington, and are there any stops?
Carry a minimum of 80 litres beyond your main tank — Imintji Community Store (roughly 170 km east of Derby on the Gibb) sells fuel but hours are limited and stock isn't guaranteed. There is no fuel at Mornington. Plan on zero reliable fuel stops between Derby and camp and treat Imintji as a bonus, not a certainty.
