Gibb River Road — Manning Gorge Dispersed Camp

Past the Manning Gorge Campground turnoff on the Gibb River Road, there are well-worn bush pullouts along the corrugated red-dirt track where self-contained overlanders have been dropping swags for years. The landscape is classic Kimberley — termite mounds, boab trees, spinifex, and the occasional jabiru overhead. No facilities, no fences, no neighbours if you time it right. The vibe is raw and quiet once the grey nomad convoys thin out after May.

Access is straightforward in a high-clearance 4WD — the Gibb itself handles that — but wet season flooding (November through April) makes these pullouts completely inaccessible. Stick to the Dry (May–October). Carry all your water; creeks in this stretch are not reliable drinking sources without treatment. Fire restrictions apply during extreme fire danger periods — check with the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley before you light anything.
