Gibb River Road — Hann River Crossing Dispersed Camp
Pull off the Gibb River Road near the Hann River crossing and you’re into classic Kimberley dispersed camping — flat sandy ground under paperbarks and river gums, the Hann River running (or dry, depending on season) a stone’s throw away. No facilities, no signs, no booking system. This is bush camping the old way: pick your flat, dig a cat hole, and watch the stars. Occasionally busy during the dry season peak (July–August) when Cape York-style convoys roll the Gibb, but it’s a long road with room to spread out.
Access is 4WD only — the Hann River crossing itself can be a sand trap when soft. Check the crossing depth via the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley road reports before committing in early dry season (May–June). Fires require a permit during declared fire seasons — check DFES WA before you light anything. Self-sufficient rigs only; nearest fuel is at Mount Barnett Roadhouse (~30 km east) or Imintji to the west.
