Barnett River Gorge — Kimberley Sandstone Canyon Viewpoint

Barnett River Gorge sits just off the Gibb River Road roughly 25 km east of the Mount Barnett Roadhouse turnoff. The gorge cuts through classic Kimberley sandstone, dropping you into a narrow canyon with a permanent waterhole at its base — genuinely cold water, shaded walls, and the kind of silence that makes you forget you were just grinding corrugations for three hours. It’s a short scramble down from the carpark, doable in runners, but the rocks can be slick after rain. No facilities beyond a rough carpark. Peak dry season (June–August) brings caravans and tour groups mid-morning, so aim for first light.

Access is off the Gibb River Road on a short dirt spur — any 4WD handles it dry, but the final descent to the gorge rim gets slippery in the wet. Wet season (November–April) the gorge itself can be flooded and inaccessible. Check road conditions with the Shire of Derby–West Kimberley before heading out.
