Duffey Lake Road

The Duffey Lake Road (Highway 99) cuts a spectacular line through British Columbia’s Coast Mountains, threading between 7,000-foot peaks and past the turquoise waters of Duffey Lake itself. This paved but challenging route connects Lillooet to Pemberton through some of the most dramatic terrain in the province, with the Cayoosh Creek crossing and steep grades that’ll test your rig’s cooling system on the way up to Duffey Lake Pass at 4,200 feet.

While technically a highway, the Duffey demands respect—rockfall zones, avalanche paths, and weather that can turn deadly fast make this no Sunday drive. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for confidence, though passenger cars can manage in good conditions. Best tackled May through October when snow isn’t closing the pass. You’ll find dispersed camping spots near the lake and creek crossings, but pack everything you need—services are sparse between the two towns. This route delivers serious mountain scenery without requiring technical 4WD skills.
