Transamerica Trail — Tennessee Divide to Damascus via Iron Mountain and Whitetop Laurel

Appalachian ridgelines, red clay, and the finish line.

Moderate

The Tennessee-to-Virginia segment of Sam Correro’s Trans-America Trail is the route’s emotional payoff. From Unicoi County in northeast Tennessee, the track climbs the ridgelines of Cherokee National Forest, cuts through the bald summits of Iron Mountain, and drops into the Whitetop Laurel Creek watershed before crossing into Virginia and rolling into Damascus — Trail Town USA. The forest roads here are classic TAT: narrow, canopied, alternating between hardpacked gravel and slick red clay that turns greasy inside of ten minutes of rain. The Iron Mountain Trail road segment near Backbone Rock is a highlight — tight switchbacks, big drop-offs, worth every foot.

Difficulty is moderate to difficult depending on recent weather. Any stock 4WD with decent all-terrain tires handles it dry; add mud and those grades demand lockers or aggressive tread. The TAT through here is open year-round but spring (March–May) and fall (September–October) are the sweet spots — summer brings thick vegetation that hides the road edge, winter brings ice on the shaded north-face grades. Damascus has fuel, food, and camping at Beartree Recreation Area nearby. No permit required. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent on the ridge sections. Finish in Damascus and you’ve earned your coffee.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock 4WD truck or SUV handle this section of the TAT without modifications?

Yes, a stock 4WD with all-terrain tires is the minimum and will get through under normal conditions. That said, the red clay on wet Iron Mountain roads turns slick fast, and low-range will earn its keep on steeper descents — a lift helps but isn't required.

When does this section typically become impassable due to weather?

Winter snow and ice on Iron Mountain and Whitetop can close or seriously complicate this route from late November through March. Spring mud season (late March into April) can also bog things down — April through June and September through October are the sweet spots.

Do I need a permit to run this route through Cherokee National Forest?

No permit is required to drive the route. Dispersed camping within Cherokee National Forest is free and allowed in most areas, but check current fire restrictions with the USFS before you go — they change seasonally and aren't always posted at the trailhead.

What's the hardest section to drive between the Tennessee Divide and Damascus?

The Iron Mountain ridge segment is the crux — narrow, rutted forest roads with exposure on the edges, and that Appalachian clay gets genuinely treacherous after rain. It's not technical rock crawling, but a wet Iron Mountain in a heavily loaded rig will test your confidence and your tires.

How far is it between fuel stops on this stretch, and is there reliable cell service if something goes wrong?

Plan for roughly 80–100 miles between reliable fuel — top off in Elizabethton before you head out and again in Damascus when you arrive. Cell service is spotty at best across most of this route, with near-zero signal on the ridgelines, so a satellite communicator is the smart call, not optional.
