Cordillera Oriental Trans-Andean Route

Trans-Andean páramo traverse to Venezuelan frontier

Expert

This grueling high-altitude traverse cuts across Colombia’s Eastern Cordillera, linking the capital region to the Venezuelan frontier through some of the most challenging terrain in South America. The route threads between páramo ecosystems above 3,500 meters, descending through cloud forests where fog can reduce visibility to mere meters, before climbing back to windswept passes where condors ride thermals. Key waypoints include the Boyacá Bridge crossing at Puente de Boyacá and the treacherous descent into the Chicamocha Canyon, where loose shale and narrow shelf roads test both nerves and mechanical sympathy.

This is expert-level territory demanding a fully-equipped expedition vehicle with dual batteries, recovery gear, and cold-weather preparation. The route requires multiple river crossings, some unbridged, and several sections become impassable during heavy rains from April to November. Fuel stops are scarce beyond Tunja, making extra jerry cans essential. Best tackled during dry season (December-March), this 280-kilometer odyssey rewards the prepared with pristine wilderness, pre-Columbian archaeological sites, and the satisfaction of conquering one of Colombia’s most demanding overland challenges.
