Walker River Canyon Mining District Road
Gold rush ghosts and granite canyon challenges.
The Walker River carved this granite canyon through the Sierra Nevada foothills during ice ages, but 1870s prospectors carved the road that follows it today. This technical 25-mile route winds from Yerington southeast through the Singatse Range, passing the ruins of Nordyke and other ghost camps where Chinese miners once worked played-out claims. The track demands careful line choice through boulder gardens and creek crossings, especially at the notorious Devil’s Gate narrows where granite walls squeeze the road to single-vehicle width.
High clearance 4WD essential, preferably with skid plates for the rock gardens. Summer means potential flash flooding and brutal heat in the canyon bottom; winter brings snow closure above 6000 feet. Spring and fall offer the sweet spot for this challenging route. No permits required, but check Walker River Paiute Tribe regulations if accessing tribal lands. Natural hot springs near the midpoint provide a perfect soak after wrestling with the rocks, and dispersed camping opportunities abound in side canyons away from the mining ruins.
