Tuktoyaktuk Winter Ice Road — Inuvik to the Arctic Ocean

Frozen delta, Arctic Ocean, and minus-30 reality checks.

Expert

Before the all-season Inuvik–Tuktoyaktuk Highway opened in 2017, this frozen corridor was the only winter link between Inuvik and the Inuvialuit community of Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean shore. The winter ice road still operates across the Mackenzie River and delta channels as a separate seasonal route used by locals and the brave handful of overlanders who want to experience crossing a frozen major river delta with nothing but ice beneath them and open tundra stretching to the horizon. You cross multiple river channels, the open delta flats, and finish by driving through Tuk itself to touch the Arctic Ocean — a bucket-list moment that is genuinely earned in minus-30 conditions.

Do not underestimate this one. Rated Expert in winter ice road conditions — you must understand ice road protocol, carry a survival kit, emergency cold-weather gear, and a sat communicator. Travel in convoy where possible. The NWT government posts ice thickness and road status daily when it’s open, typically January through late March. No permits but all ice road rules apply. Fuel in Inuvik — Tuk has limited supply. There is no cell service across the delta. This road demands respect: it has killed people who treated it like pavement.
