Dempster Highway — Inuvik to Tsiigehtchic Arctic River Crossing

Arctic gravel, river ferries, and real silence.

Moderate

This is the northern tail of Canada’s only all-season public highway to cross the Arctic Circle, and the NWT segment hits different. Dropping south from Inuvik through the Richardson Mountains foothills, you cross the Peel River at Fort McPherson by cable ferry in summer — or ice road when the river freezes solid enough to hold rigs. From there it’s another grind to Tsiigehtchic at the confluence of the Arctic Red and Mackenzie rivers, a Gwich’in community that sees far fewer visitors than Fort McPherson. The road surface is permafrost-heaved gravel, slick as snot when wet, with flying stone chips that’ll eat your windshield if you get too close to oncoming traffic.

Expect frost boils, soft shoulders, and zero cell service for most of the run. A full-size spare is non-negotiable — carry two if you’re smart. Fuel at Inuvik before you leave; Fort McPherson has a small station but hours are unpredictable. Best season is July through September for ferry crossings; freeze-up and break-up shoulder seasons can strand you for days. The payoff is raw subarctic landscape, almost no traffic, and the kind of quiet that makes you realize how loud your regular life is.
