Toiyabe Crest Trail
Technical ridge running through Nevada's high country
The Toiyabe Crest Trail follows Nevada’s backbone mountains from Austin south to Arc Dome, climbing through pinyon pine into alpine zones where bristlecone pines cling to windswept ridges at 11,000 feet. This 45-mile route stays high on the range’s spine, offering views across the Reese River Valley and Monitor Range. Key challenges include the technical rock gardens near Columbine Summit and narrow shelf roads with thousand-foot dropoffs approaching Arc Dome’s weather station ruins.
Expert difficulty requiring full-size 4WD with skid plates and aggressive tires. Afternoon thunderstorms bring lightning danger above treeline from June through August. Stock up on fuel in Austin — there’s nothing for 100 miles. The reward is standing atop Nevada’s most prominent peak outside the Sierra, surrounded by endless basin-and-range geography. Snow blocks the upper elevations from November through May, making this a summer-only adventure for serious mountain drivers.
