Sumter National Forest Whitewater River Gorge Technical Loop

The Whitewater River cuts a brutal gorge through billion-year-old granite, and the old logging road that drops into it demands respect and good line choice. What started as a railroad grade in the 1890s to haul timber out of the gorge became a jeep trail when the rails were pulled up during World War II’s steel drive. The route navigates massive granite boulder fields and exposed bedrock shelves where one wrong move puts you into house-sized rocks or over the edge into whitewater. Lower Whitewater Falls thunders 200 feet down the gorge wall, visible and audible from several points along the descent, while the technical sections require precise wheel placement and patient spotting.

Expert-level difficulty with mandatory rock crawling, serious exposure, and no room for error. Modified 4WD with rock sliders, skid plates, and 33-inch tires minimum — this trail eats stock vehicles. Experienced drivers only, and never attempt solo or in wet conditions. Best tackled fall through early spring when water levels are predictable and the granite offers better traction. No permits required but inform someone of your route and expected return. No camping allowed in the gorge itself due to flash flood danger, but dispersed sites available on the rim. Bring recovery gear, first aid, and communication devices — cell service is nonexistent in the gorge.
