Sumter National Forest Pinnacle Mountain Granite Quarry Circuit

Granite technical climb to convict quarries.

Expert

Pinnacle Mountain’s granite dome rises 1,100 feet above the Piedmont forest, scarred by century-old quarry operations that supplied stone for Columbia’s State House and countless Confederate monuments. The technical challenge begins immediately—steep granite slabs require precise tire placement and momentum management, especially when wet granite becomes glass-slick. The old quarry roads switchback up exposed rock faces, passing rusted cable anchors and dynamite blast holes from the convict labor camps that operated here from 1880 to 1930.

This is expert-level terrain requiring modified 4WD with rock sliders, aggressive tires, and front/rear lockers. Even experienced drivers walk the tough sections first. Spring and fall offer the best grip—summer heat makes the granite untouchable, while winter ice creates lethal conditions. No permits needed, but the Forest Service closes access during fire season. No camping on the granite, but dispersed sites exist in the surrounding forest. The reward is 360-degree views across three states from one of South Carolina’s most challenging technical climbs.
