Soldier Creek Trail

Pine Ridge cavalry route with serious creek crossings

Moderate

Soldier Creek Trail cuts through some of Nebraska’s most rugged terrain in the Pine Ridge escarpment, following wagon ruts carved by cavalry units in the 1870s. The 18-mile route winds through deep creek beds, past towering sandstone bluffs, and over rolling prairie between Chadron and the South Dakota border. Watch for the historic Soldier Creek Station ruins at mile 8, where troops once watered their horses before the final push to Fort Robinson.

This is a legitimate moderate trail requiring high-clearance 4WD for the dozen creek crossings and rocky climbs through the breaks. Spring runoff can make crossings impassable, so stick to late summer through fall. No permits needed on this mix of state and private land, but respect gates and stay on established tracks. Pack extra water and fuel—cell service is nonexistent once you drop into the creek drainage.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock 4Runner make it through the creek crossings?

Yes, but barely - the creek crossings can get knee-deep and rocky with potential for high-centering on the sandstone shelves. Good skid plates and recovery gear are essential.

Is Soldier Creek Trail passable in spring?

Avoid spring completely - snowmelt makes the creek crossings dangerous and the trail gets muddy and rutted. August through October offers the most reliable water levels and firm ground.

Do I need permits to run Soldier Creek Trail?

No permits required, but you'll need a Nebraska State Parks entry permit for the trailhead access. The trail itself runs through mixed public lands with no additional fees.

What's the gnarliest part of this trail?

The triple creek crossing around mile 12 where you navigate three consecutive water crossings with loose rock shelves between each one. Many rigs get stuck here trying to maintain momentum.

Can I find decent dispersed camping along the trail?

Yes, several good spots exist on the ridgelines between miles 6-10 with views of the Pine Ridge, but bring all your water since the creek water isn't reliable for drinking.
