Santa Rosa Range Hinkey Summit Trail
Nevada's most isolated mountain wilderness
Hinkey Summit cuts through the heart of the Santa Rosa Range where few humans venture, climbing to over 9,000 feet through aspen groves that explode gold in September. This forgotten mining road connects old prospects scattered across the range’s granite spine, passing abandoned cabins and rusted equipment from tungsten operations that barely lasted through World War II. The route crosses Hinkey Creek multiple times and navigates steep switchbacks that would challenge a mountain goat.
Difficult to expert terrain demanding true 4WD with low-range and excellent ground clearance. Rock slides, washouts, and creek crossings keep things interesting—recovery gear essential. Summer only access due to heavy snow from October through June. No fuel, water, or cell service for 100 miles in any direction. This is Nevada’s most isolated mountain range, perfect for those seeking genuine wilderness solitude. Dispersed camping is outstanding, but come completely self-sufficient for multi-day adventures.
