Ruta del Diablo Verde Veracruz Cloud Forest Circuit

This gnarly mountain route snakes through the cloud forests of central Veracruz, connecting the colonial town of Coatepec with the volcanic slopes near Pico de Orizaba. The track winds past abandoned coffee haciendas from the 1800s and crosses half a dozen seasonal creeks that turn into torrents during the rainy months. The real test comes at Barranca del Infierno — a technical rock garden descent that’ll have you in low range and spotting every wheel placement.

This is proper 4WD territory requiring high clearance, skid plates, and recovery gear. The volcanic rock tears up tires, so pack two spares minimum. Best tackled during dry season (November-April) when creek crossings are manageable and the fog lifts enough to see the route markers. No permits needed, but fuel up in Coatepec — there’s nothing out there but ghost plantations and some of the most dramatic cloud forest scenery in Mexico.
