Tortuguero Canal Access Road and Backcountry Airstrip Network

This muddy maze of plantation roads and overgrown airstrips threads through Tortuguero’s roadless Caribbean lowlands, where banana companies carved supply routes in the 1960s before switching to boat transport. The main track follows the Tortuguero Canal’s western bank from Cariari through flooded forest, with side spurs to three abandoned grass airstrips used by fruit companies and later drug smugglers. The notorious Cuatro Esquinas junction at kilometer 22 marks where four plantation roads converge—local guides call it the ‘crossroads to nowhere’ since GPS becomes useless in the dense canopy.

Wet season (May-November) makes this route nearly impassable even for modified rigs, requiring winches and maxtrax for the inevitable bog-downs. High-clearance 4WD minimum, but serious mud tires and underbody protection recommended for the deep ruts and submerged logs. No services exist between Cariari and Tortuguero village, accessible only by boat. The payoff is exclusive access to pristine turtle nesting beaches and some of Costa Rica’s most remote jungle camping along canal tributaries.
