Fort Resolution Winter Road — Hay River to Fort Resolution via Buffalo Lake
Frozen lifeline to the oldest Dene town on Great Slave.
Fort Resolution sits on the south shore of Great Slave Lake and for most of the year it’s accessible only by air or by boat. When winter road season opens — usually January — this route across frozen lakes, muskeg, and boreal flats becomes the town’s lifeline. The road runs roughly 170 km from Hay River southeast, crossing several frozen lake sections including Buffalo Lake and smaller unnamed water bodies before terminating at Fort Resolution. Those lake crossings are the crux — wind drifts obliterate the track fast and pressure ridges can stack up overnight. The community of Fort Resolution itself is one of the oldest European-contact settlements in the NWT, with a history going back to the North West Company fur trade era.
Treat this like any serious NWT winter road — not a joyride. Minimum two vehicles, full cold-weather kit, extra fuel, satellite communicator, and the sense to turn around if conditions go sideways. The territorial government opens and closes this road based on ice thickness reports; check the hotline before you leave Hay River. No permits required. There is zero cell service for most of the route. Best window is mid-January to late February. What you get at the end is a tight-knit Dene community, views across the frozen expanse of Great Slave, and a story worth telling around a fire.
