The route passes through Illizi, a small administrative center with fuel, before the track deteriorates into sand navigation south toward the Tassili cliffs. Djanet itself sits in a canyon basin ringed by orange sandstone walls carved over millennia; arriving by the southern piste rather than the sealed northern road feels earned.
This is an expert-level expedition route, full stop. Navigation by GPS and paper topo is mandatory — there are no markers and tracks bifurcate constantly across the erg. A minimum two-vehicle convoy is non-negotiable; a single breakdown here can be fatal. Carry at minimum 400 liters of fuel and 100 liters of water per vehicle. Sand ladders, a high-lift jack, and recovery gear must be aboard.
