Pico de Orizaba Base Camp Circuit
Mexico's highest driveable mountain approach
The Pico de Orizaba Base Camp Circuit follows logging roads and volcanic approach routes to 14,000+ feet on the flanks of Mexico’s highest mountain at 18,491 feet. Starting from the village of Tlachichuca, the route climbs through dense pine and fir forests to reach Piedra Grande Hut at 14,107 feet—base camp for summit attempts. The road deteriorates from gravel to loose volcanic scree, with switchbacks carved into steep volcanic slopes and occasional river crossings swollen by mountain snowmelt.
This route demands serious high-altitude preparation and 4WD with low-range gearing for steep volcanic grades exceeding 25%. Weather changes rapidly above 12,000 feet, with snow possible year-round. Best accessed May through September when roads are passable, though chains recommended for wet conditions. No permits required for vehicle access, but mountain guides recommended for summit attempts. The payoff is camping at Mexico’s highest vehicle-accessible elevation with views across the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt.
