Pocahontas State Park CCC Road Network
Depression-era roads through Piedmont forest
Built by CCC crews in the 1930s, these fire roads spider through Pocahontas State Park’s rolling Piedmont forest, connecting scenic overlooks, primitive camping areas, and the remnants of Depression-era work camps. The 15-mile network includes the original CCC camp site at Camp Hornet, where concrete foundations and rusted machinery mark one of Virginia’s most successful conservation programs. Swift Creek cuts through the heart of the park, requiring three ford crossings that range from ankle-deep to bumper-high depending on recent rainfall.
Easy to moderate difficulty makes this perfect for stock vehicles with decent ground clearance—no true 4WD required except after heavy rains. The sandy soil drains well, but watch for soft spots near the creek crossings. Open year-round with best conditions spring through fall when the hardwood canopy provides excellent camping under towering oaks and poplars. Permits required for backcountry camping, but day use is free. This is Virginia overlanding for families—close enough to Richmond for a weekend escape, remote enough to feel like wilderness.
