Lake Anna State Park ORV Trail Complex
Virginia's premier ORV playground near Lake Anna
The Lake Anna State Park ORV Trail Complex cuts through 15 miles of rolling Piedmont terrain where red clay meets sandy loam. Originally carved by timber operations in the 1960s, these interconnected trails wind past old homestead foundations and through second-growth pine stands that frame glimpses of Lake Anna’s sprawling waters. The notorious Sand Trap section at mile marker 7 has swallowed more than one overconfident weekend warrior — deep sugar sand that demands momentum and proper tire pressure.
This is proper high-clearance country requiring 4WD in wet conditions and good ground clearance year-round. Spring brings muddy clay sections that’ll test traction control, while summer heat makes the sandy stretches more forgiving. No permits needed, but the $5 park entry fee gets you access to restrooms and water at the visitor center. Best tackled on a day trip from Richmond or DC — you’ll earn views of one of Virginia’s largest freshwater lakes and plenty of stories about Virginia’s surprisingly technical terrain.
