Klondike Loop Road
Chase gold rush ghosts to the top of the world
The Klondike Loop traces the footsteps of stampeders through 720 kilometers of subarctic wilderness, connecting Dawson City to Fairbanks via the legendary Top of the World Highway. This seasonal route climbs to treeless ridgelines where you can see forever across rolling tundra, then plunges into creek valleys where dredge tailings still mark old mining claims. The notorious Chicken, Alaska fuel stop sits halfway along Taylor Highway, where the locals will tell you stories about the road that’ll curl your toes.
Moderate to difficult depending on weather—spring thaw and fall freeze-up create nightmare conditions with frost heaves and washouts. High clearance essential, 4WD recommended for creek crossings and muddy sections. Open roughly mid-May to late September, weather permitting. Fuel at Dawson City, Eagle, and Chicken—carry extra water and emergency food. The reward is driving one of North America’s most remote international highways through country that hasn’t changed since Klondike Kate walked these hills.
