Dempster Highway Winter Road

Canada's only public road to the Arctic Circle

Difficult

Starting where the Klondike Highway ends in Dawson City, the Dempster punches north through the Ogilvie and Richardson Mountains to cross the Arctic Circle at kilometer 405, making it the only public road in Canada to reach the true Arctic. The route passes through genuine wilderness where caribou migrations cross the road, the midnight sun never sets in summer, and winter temperatures hit minus 50. Eagle Plains serves as the only fuel stop between Dawson and Inuvik, sitting lonely on the tundra like an outpost at the edge of the world.

This isn’t technical driving but it’s serious expedition territory requiring full preparation — extra tires, tools, fuel, food, and emergency gear. Summer brings mosquitoes that will drive you insane, while winter offers northern lights and bone-numbing cold. The road stays open year-round but conditions change fast and towing costs are astronomical. What you get is the real Arctic — caribou, wolves, eagles, and the satisfaction of reaching Inuvik under your own power.
