Trans-Kgalagadi Desert Route
Red sand crossing through Kalahari's heart
This route cuts straight through the heart of the Kalahari’s red sand country, following ancient game paths and colonial-era cattle routes between Ghanzi in Botswana and Mata-Mata Gate on the South African border. You’ll thread between massive red dunes, cross the fossil Auob River bed multiple times, and navigate the notorious Twee Rivieren sand trap where many overland expeditions have spent unplanned nights digging out. The route passes several abandoned boreholes from failed cattle ranching attempts in the 1960s, their windmill skeletons now navigation markers in endless red sand.
This is serious sand driving requiring sand ladders, compressor, and desert recovery gear. Stock vehicles will struggle in the deeper sections near Mata-Mata crossing. Best tackled April to September when temperatures drop below 40°C and seasonal rains haven’t turned clay pans into impassable mud. Carry 5 liters water per person per day and fuel for 1000km. You earn bragging rights and some of the purest desert solitude left in southern Africa.
