Hudson River Historic Railway Trail
Railroad ruins and river views in the Hudson Valley
The old New York Central railroad bed winds north from Poughkeepsie through crumbling brick kilns and forgotten quarries where immigrant crews once carved limestone from the Hudson Valley hills. This 18-mile route traces the east bank of the Hudson River, passing through Staatsburg’s mansion country and the Norrie Point ruins before reaching the Mills Mansion historic district. The most challenging section navigates around the collapsed Esopus Creek trestle, requiring a technical detour through private timber roads.
Moderate difficulty with some loose gravel and washouts after spring floods. Stock high-clearance vehicles handle it fine, but aired-down tires help on the steeper limestone sections. Best driven April through November when the ferry crossings aren’t iced over. No permits needed, but respect the posted private sections. Spectacular fall colors and Hudson River views make this a photographer’s dream, plus decent camping spots near the old quarry overlooks.
