Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway
Volcanic lakes beneath Three Sisters peaks
This 82-mile paved and gravel loop winds through the volcanic heart of the Oregon Cascades, connecting a chain of alpine lakes beneath the jagged Three Sisters peaks. The route passes obsidian flows near Paulina Lake, crosses century-old lava fields, and threads between pristine mountain lakes like Elk, Hosmer, and Cultus. The western section climbs over McKenzie Pass, where you’ll drive across raw lava that looks like it cooled yesterday.
Most of the route is paved highway accessible to any vehicle, but the gravel sections require high clearance when wet. Snow closes the high passes from November through May, making summer the prime season. Bring camping gear—there are dozens of established campgrounds and endless dispersed sites. This isn’t technical driving, but the volcanic scenery and crystal-clear lakes make it one of Oregon’s most rewarding scenic drives for overlanders seeking beauty over challenge.
