Any high-clearance vehicle handles this moderate route easily, though 4WD helps in winter conditions. Prime season runs May through October — winter brings snow and seasonal closures. No permits required and dispersed camping is allowed throughout the corridor. Fill up in Sisters and pack plenty of water; services are non-existent along the ridge. This is Central Oregon at its scenic best, accessible enough for most rigs but remote enough to feel like discovery.
