Awatere Valley Road

Remote Marlborough high country river crossing route

Moderate

The Awatere Valley Road cuts a rough line through some of Marlborough’s most isolated high country, following the Awatere River from State Highway 1 through working sheep stations toward the Kaikoura ranges. This 70-kilometer gravel track passes through Muzzle Station and climbs toward Wards Pass, with multiple ford crossings of the Awatere River that can run deep after rain. The road ends at a locked gate near the Canterbury border, but not before delivering expansive views across the Inland Kaikoura Range.

The route demands high clearance and 4WD capability for the river fords and rough station tracks beyond Muzzle Station homestead. Best tackled in summer when river levels drop, though even then you’ll want recovery gear and experience reading water. No services exist beyond the sealed section, so carry fuel, food, and water for multi-day exploration. This is classic New Zealand high country – vast, empty, and unforgiving to the unprepared, but rewarding drivers with solitude few Kiwis ever experience.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Hilux or Prado handle Awatere Valley Road without modifications?

Yes, a stock high-clearance 4WD like a Hilux or Prado is the minimum you want here. Lifted rigs give you more confidence on the river crossings, but a standard 4WD with decent all-terrains will get through in normal summer conditions.

When is Awatere Valley Road accessible and what shuts it down?

December through March is the reliable window — summer low flows keep the river crossings manageable. Outside that, snowfall on the tops and flood-swollen river levels can close the route fast; spring crossings in particular can be dangerous after snowmelt.

Do you need a permit to drive Awatere Valley Road?

Portions run through private high country stations, so you'll need to confirm access permissions before you go — don't assume it's open. DOC-managed sections don't require a permit, but respect any station gates and leave them as you find them.

What's the hardest section and what actually makes it difficult?

The river crossings are where things get real — water depth and current vary significantly with recent rainfall, and there's no bail-out infrastructure if you get it wrong. Pick your line carefully, walk crossings on foot first if you're unsure, and know that a swollen Awatere River mid-route is a hard stop, not a challenge to push through.

Is there anywhere to fuel up near the trail, and how far is the nearest town?

Ward is your last stop for fuel before heading in — it's a small settlement so don't count on a full service station, top up in Blenheim if you're coming from that direction. There's no cell service on the route, so sort your fuel, food, and communications plan before you leave the tarmac.
