Molesworth Back Country Explorer Route
High country station mustering tracks
Molesworth Station sprawls across 180,000 hectares of South Island high country, accessible only when conditions allow through gates that swing shut with the first snows. This isn’t the main Molesworth Station Road – it’s the network of mustering tracks that spider out from Acheron Road across windswept tussock lands toward isolated huts like Dip Flat and Isolated Saddle. The route crosses multiple rivers including Acheron and Clarence tributaries, with the real prize being access to Rainbow Station’s boundary and views across the Inland Kaikoura Range.
Difficult rating due to river crossings, soft ground, and rapidly changing weather that can trap you inside station boundaries. Requires high-clearance 4WD with diff locks and recovery gear – soft tussock country will bog standard vehicles. Only accessible December through April, and you need written permission from the station manager. Pack everything including fuel, food, and emergency shelter. This is station work country that gives you a taste of New Zealand’s largest farm operation, where the musterers still move stock on horseback across country that hasn’t changed in a century.
