Whangamoa Range Circuit
Nelson's forest road to coastal paradise
The Whangamoa Range forms the backbone between Nelson and the Marlborough Sounds, and this circuit showcases the region’s forestry heritage alongside some of the South Island’s best coastal views. Starting from the Rai Valley, the main forest road climbs through Pinus radiata plantations to the range crest, where lookout points offer sweeping vistas across Tasman Bay to the Richmond Ranges. The technical highlight comes at Trig K, where a steep spur road tests traction on loose metal before rewarding drivers with views stretching to D’Urville Island.
Moderate difficulty requires good ground clearance and steady nerves on the narrow ridge sections, but most capable 4WDs handle it fine in dry conditions. Active logging means weekday closures are common – check with Nelson Forests before heading out. Best tackled in summer when the roads are dry and visibility is clear. No permits needed, but respect the working forest environment. You’ll earn genuine solitude, dramatic scenery, and a proper taste of New Zealand’s plantation forestry culture. Pack lunch and camera.
